Artist Biography
Tamora Israel is a poet, interdisciplinary artist, performer, and cultural organizer, and Co-CEO of Ascending Phoenix Productions whose work lives at the intersection of art and activism.
A dynamic presence on and off the stage, Tamora has performed, collaborated, organized, and produced live social, political, and musical events, theatrical productions, and immersive art installations throughout the region. Her recent appearances include the Nantucket Poetry Festival, and her powerful portrayal of Lady in Red in For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow Is Enuf by Ntozake Shange at Cape Cod Community College.
Her original full-length theater experience, Poetry From My Brain Parts, exemplifies her signature approach to interdisciplinary storytelling. Blending spoken-word poetry, storytelling, theater, comedy, and R&B music to tell one woman’s story of Becoming.
Beyond performance, Tamora is a dedicated community architect. In collaboration with Belonging Books, she founded and hosts 438 Open Mic at The Cordial Eye in Hyannis, an inclusive creative space designed to nurture emerging voices and cultivate authentic expression. Her civic engagement extends to board leadership as a founding member of The Cordial Eye and Amplify POC Inc, where she continues to serve on The Cordial Eye Board and on the nominating committee for Amplify POC. She also sits on the Board of Provincetown Television, further expanding her impact across regional arts and media.
In recognition of her artistic excellence and community leadership, Tamora was honored with the 2024 Black Excellence Award by the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus, celebrating her contributions to education, culture, and activism.
